Passyunk restaurant kit

Us FatSteak Clubbers have been missing restaurants rather a lot. Naturally, we’ve been trying out the various restaurant-at-home kits that are available, partly to support ones we love, and partly because we can’t resist the small amount of cooking skill needed to finish them!

The Passyunk restaurant in London is one I really miss. As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, and a huge lover of the Philly cheesesteak, how could I not? I was always going to get their LOVE Bundle from the moment they made them available UK wide. As with all our reviews, they are not sponsored.

Step 1 - What’s in the box?

  • I went for the steak and wings bundle - ingredients for two Philly cheesesteaks (Hoagie bread, chopped onions, rib-eye steak and your choice of cheese) and two portions of wings (12 with buffalo sauce to coat and blue cheese sauce to dip).

  • I also threw in a big pack of potato tots because they are irresistible (mini-hash browns essentially).

  • The whole thing is delivered overnight frozen in a chilled box. Ideally use it they day it is delivered but you can store and use up to 3 days later.

Step 2 - Heating and eating

  • Cooking instructions can be downloaded as written or via a video and accessed on the website or from QR codes in the box. A Philly soundtrack on Spotify can be accessed the same way and playing it definitely set the mood and improved the cooking!

  • The Hoagies are part cooked and you finish them in the oven to the get the ideal crisp surface but airy light centre.

  • The steak is pre fine sliced horizontally and needs further slicing as it cooks or just before. It is a quality cut of meat and cooks up lovely. Traditionally this is done on a hot grill plate but great results were still achieved on a hot frying pan.

  • The wings are simply finished in the oven then tossed in the hot sauce.

  • The tots are also easily finished in the oven. Some more cheese to slop over them would have been good, but I used some of my own!

Is it worth it? Totally. The flavours (and music) took me back to soul refreshing experiences in the restaurant itself. The ingredients are carefully selected and the hoagie is fairly unique in getting a cheesesteak right.
